First things first…

Every project starts somewhere — sometimes with a detailed plan, other times scribbled hastily between bites of lunch. Either way, the important bit is just getting started.
Welcome to Chivers.dev — my personal blog about coding, automation, gadgets, and anything tech-related that catches my eye. It’s a space for sharing what I build, what I learn, and the occasional misadventure along the way.
Keeping It Simple
One thing I’ve learned from previous attempts at blogging is that perfectionism often gets in the way. Overplanning, strict schedules, and chasing ideal results usually left me burned out. So this time, I’m taking a simpler approach:
“Write for one hour per week” is a better goal than “write one post per week”
The plan is to start small, iterate, and let this blog evolve naturally over time — no rigid frameworks, just consistent, honest content.
What I’ll Write About
Topics here will likely shift as my interests do, but here’s roughly what you can expect:
- Projects I’m working on – Whether it’s a small script, a bigger side project, or something that escalated beyond all reason.
- Things I’m learning – Tech concepts I’ve been diving into, courses I’m taking, or problems I’ve been stubbornly wrestling with.
- Tech & gadgets – Home networking, smart home setups, or whatever shiny new thing I’ve convinced myself is essential.
- Useful how-tos – If I’ve solved a problem that took way too long to figure out, I’ll document it so others don’t have to.
- General geekery – Cybersecurity, home automation, DIY projects, cooking, board games, or anything else that seems worth sharing.
I can’t promise I’ll cover all of this, but I’m a career software developer who genuinely enjoys tech in my spare time, so there should be plenty to explore along the way.
Who Am I?
I’m Matthew — a software developer currently working at IBM on cloud infrastructure. Beyond the day job, I’m constantly tinkering, whether that’s troubleshooting a home DIY project, testing new recipes, or diving into some random, intriguing topic just for fun.
There’s no grand strategy behind this blog; it’s simply my space to write, create, and share. If that sounds good, stick around — let’s see where this goes.
